I've been a big fan of the BB2.0 changes and have played the mode a ton since its release. Besides some balancing problems (which will hopefully get ironed out soon) I think it takes a lot of strategy and planning to actually do well, which is a great change from the spammy meta of BB1.0. However, I still have 2 big issues with BB2.0:
- Not rewarding good strategy enough. Sure, you get slightly more resources and higher trophies for attacking/defending better. It honestly doesn't make a huge difference though, and I'm already seeing players spam down troops and close the app just to get an easy elixir boost from defense. If that's how you want to play the game that's fine, but I wish there was an opportunity to really challenge your ability to strategize well against other players.
- Progression doesn't help main base. Now I know that BB is meant to be its own separate thing, and I don't think having a high level BB should be required to level up in the main base. But I've noticed that after a lot of players get the 6th builder, they basically stop playing BB entirely. Some sort of BB event that could provide magic items would be a great way to give an incentive for players to become skilled at BB, without it being too crucial like the 6th builder.
My solution to both of these problems... monthly builder base tournaments! I'm sure Supercell can do a much better job than me in designing the tournaments, but here's my rough idea:
- Registration: Similar to Clan War Leagues, once a month players will be given a window of a few days to opt into the BB tournaments. You would have to select one base layout to enter with that you cannot change throughout the tournament.
- Tournament Structure: This would be a round robin style tournament, again very similar to Clan War Leagues. You would be placed in a league with several other players around your level, and each day get a chance to attack someone new. There's a lot of variables to play with here: size of leagues, length of the event, number of attacks you get per day, etc.
- Rankings: Again, there's a lot of ways to determine ranking. Combining offensive and defensive performance would be ideal, but you'd need a way to not give too many points to players whose opponents simply forget to attack them. The simplest option would be to take the sum of offensive stars scored but I'd love to see defense incentivized more.
- Rewards: At the end of the tournament, players get to pick rewards based on their placement. The top finishers get to pick from some pretty juicy rewards like books and runes, or maybe even special decorations/skins you can only get from winning tournaments. The bottom finishers would still get something for participating, but it'd be pretty basic rewards like resources or less-desired potions.
TLDR: Introducing monthly tournaments in the Builder Base would inspire players to learn strategic play and create a great competitive environment. Players would have the chance to showcase their skills, earn prestigious rewards, and have more fun in the process. This would be a perfect way to refresh the mode alongside the release of Builder Base 2.0.
What do you all think? Is this something you'd be interested in playing? What changes/suggestions do you have? I'd love to hear your thoughts and get a discussion going, thanks!
