The Early Game - Th1-7 - some thoughts and tips

I started a new account recently, after not having done so in a long while. Here are my thoughts and some tips on the early game. Please add your own tips and tricks in the comments, and maybe we can make a new FAQ post out of this.

  1. Its FAST. You can max TH6 in 3-4 weeks, and max TH7 in 2 weeks more. Upgrade times have been significantly reduced, multiple times. This is good and bad. It gives new players a real sense or progress early on - "I'm town hall 7 and 14 is max, half way there!" Obviously though, most of us know that player is only <5% of the way into their journey. Its nice that fast progress gets players invested early, but its also a much harder smack on the nose when the upgrade times climb rapidly. Never used to see complaints about 10d upgrades at th10, but see complaints about 18d upgrades at th14. Proportionally those aren't that different, but because of the early game quickness, its feels worse IMO.
  2. You don't really need to "farm" until TH6. There are a LOT of sources of loot in the early game. - Attacking other players obviously, single player maps, practice maps, season challenges (TH1-6 is considered 1 season), the daily star bonus, and war loot. If you plan well (which isn't hard), you can make it to max Town Hall 5 with minimal attacks. You get a 4x daily star bonus for a few days when upgrading your town hall starting at Town Hall 4. That is HUGE!. The practice maps also unlock there. Pay attention to the loot rewards, and make sure you have the storage space for them before completing those.
  3. CC troops are KING early on. - Most of the early single player (goblin) maps have no air targeting defenses. None of them have time limits. That means 2 clan castle requested balloons or 1 baby dragon can clear the whole base. Easy loot for you. The CC is the best defense and best offense you have for this period. Find a good clan that will donate. Check r/ClashOfClansRecruit or our Discord Server if you do not have a good clan.
  4. For Th6-7, you need to learn to BARCH. That's half barbarians, half archers. Learn to look out for full mines and collectors, and then throw down a line of barbarians, an a line of archers behind them. The barbs tank the damage, the archers out-range the defenses. BARCH is fast training, and cost efficient.
  5. If you are going to spend any money at all, spend $3 on the 3rd builder. I've come to believe this is the best deal in the game. Better than than the "Kingly Offer" even (which I haven't seen on this account yet for an unknown reason). This deal is $2.99 for 500 gems, and the 3rd builder. The game is kinda set up to give you 500 gems for that builder already.. So paying cash for it, gives you an extra 500 gems to spend towards the 4th builder, which costs 1000. AKA you will basically be buying two builders. I hope that makes sense, if not please let me know and I'll edit. But think of it as basically buying 2 builders. DO NOT SPEND GEMS ON ANYTHING EXCEPT BUILDERS, EVEN IN THE TUTORIAL WHEN IT MAKES YOU THINK YOU MUST. You'll get the 5th in TH8 once you are strong enough to earn more achievements (the trophy based ones.) Although if you see the "Kingly Offer" or whatever its called now, buy that shit immediately. Its 4000 gems for $3. Buy your builders then save those gems until TH11+ for hero books. Its a great deal, that's basically $30-40 worth of gems. Use a creator code when you make purchases. Its in the settings, or hit the "C" wherever you can buy things. I use "ninja" as my code
  6. Just go ahead and max out each town hall. This isn't law, but as fast as things are, rushing just isn't as advantageous as it is later on, and you probably do not have the understanding of the game necessary to rush well. There are guides in our FAQ that detail how to rush well, please read them, especially Tee's. From TH9 on it makes sense to start to strategically rush. You can do it earlier, or never. There's a lot of variables when it comes to play style. But give yourself enough time to get a feel for the game and how you will play before committing to one way or the other.
  7. Complete the Season Challenges- Free loot and gems. Check in on them, and do them. Its a small button in the bottom left, next to the big attack button.
  8. Start Builder Base early (now) - The only way to get 6 builders is by progress on the builder base. Its unlocked at TH4 by rebuilding the boat. You can't get that builder until you reach TH10, but man will you be glad you knocked it out early once you get there. It sucks, its boring, but its not that hard and takes minimal time. Read "O.T.T.O" guides here in our FAQ or on YouTube.
  9. Have fun. In the end there's not really a wrong way to play. No base is so rushed or crappy its unfixable. Maxing out each Town Hall can be really satisfying even if its ultimately a little slower to reach end game. Each level introduces new troops and concepts that help you for the years to come. Its not a race to the end, there is fun gameplay at all levels.

Please add any tips to this post for early game play that I missed. The subreddit grows by 450ish people a day, many are new players. Lets welcome them and get them off to a good start!
