Clan War change for better participation

The way it works now is:

  1. Matchup
  2. Prep day
  3. Battle day

Let's turn that around a bit.

  1. Prep day
  2. Matchup
  3. Battle day

Prep day starts with a clan leader starts it, but there is no roster selection. Push the button, prep day starts.

On prep day, every member who wants to war must do two things. One, they make a request for their defensive troops, which will show up in the chat like any other troop request. They can leave it blank or specify what they want. Two, they "pay in" to be in the war. This can be loot, priced less than they'd win back by doing any attacks at all, or it can be by filling some number of war castles.

At the end of prep day, there's a roster made up of those who paid in, and the Supercell Cray can match that with the roster of some other clan same as matchmaking works now.

Why do this? Everyone in the war invested in being in the war, so they're likely to show up for it. There's no more managing an opt in flag. It could also shorten prep day for a really dedicated war clan by having prep end if every single clan member has entered and has a full castle.

What if, you ask, there's an odd number on the roster? Perhaps the leader who starts the war can designate "filler" players to make up a possible gap. Maybe players can vary their own pay in amounts, and those who pay more go in first. Maybe a few people at random get a refund and sit out. Maybe a few players get an extra attack in the war to make up the gap. I prefer the filler idea since it's closest to what we do in our clan anyway, but I suspect that are lots of good solutions.

Why not do this? It would be a hassle for someone doing solo wars or retirement communities who want to go to war with idle players. Perhaps they could designate the whole clan as "filler" and let slip the dogs of lava. I don't know, I didn't spend all day thinking about this.
